Rule of XM trading hours

Timing of switch between summer and winter time with XM

There are two time zones with XM, which is, summer time (GMT+3) and winter time (GMT+2). Summer time is the system where standard time becomes 1 hour ahead than winter time during summer period when sunrise becomes earlier in order to utilize the time for sunlight. Starting time of trading hours and the time of economic indicator release are earlier by 1 hour in summer time than in winter. So please be noted.

Timing of switch between summer and winter time differs by countries. Cyprus where XM's Headquarters resides switches the time as follows: XM changes its winter/summer time at this timing on MT4/MT5.

Timing of switch between summer and winter time with XM

Summer time(GMT+3) Winter time(GMT+2)
Time difference with Swiss: 1 hour
(Minus 1 hour for MT4/MT5)
Summer time(GMT+3)
Winter time(GMT+2)
Time difference with Swiss: 1 hour
(Minus 1 hour for MT4/MT5)
  1. Above is the switch timing between summer and winter time applied in XM's MT4/MT5. It is different from switch between summer and winter time in actual trading hours of each country. So please be noted.
  2. Trading hours of each description provided by XM are affected by the market of each country. Therefore the timing of switch between summer and winter time will be different by descriptions. So please be noted.

Time on XM's MT4/MT5 server

XM's MT4 (MetaTrader 4)/MT5 (MetaTrader 5) shows the standard time of Cyprus where XM's Headquarters resides. In order for you to check the time on XM's MT4/MT5, you need to take the time difference between the place you live and Cyprus into consideration.

Cyprus time is GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) and Swiss time is GMT+1 (GMT+2 in summer time), therefore the time difference is 1 hour. You can easily calculate Swiss time by deducting 1 hour from MT4/MT5 time.

What is GMT?

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. World standard time is set based on this time. Swiss time is 1 hour ahead of GMT+0 (GMT+2 in summer), therefore it is GMT+1 (GMT+2 in summer).

Trades outside of trading hours

No orders/position closes are acceptable outside of trading hours with XM. However markets are always moving even outside of trading hours and there are occasionally big movements and sometimes there are big gaps of price between weekend closing rate and opening rate of the following week. It is called 'exhaustion gap.'

Not only orders/position closes are acceptable, limit orders/stop loss orders are also not executed. So there may be the cases that you may suffer an unexpected big loss when there is an exhaustion gap and unusual big loss may arise due to a loss cut far below the level of loss limit line. Please make sure to keep an eye on your positions when you carry over the position during the period of not only weekends but also holidays such as Christmas/year-end and new year holidays in order to avoid unexpected loss.

Trades outside of trading hours

Trades outside of trading hours

  1. There may the cases where the chart moves from 5 minutes before market opening and 10 minutes after market close outside the trading hours. Even when the chart moves you cannot place orders/close positions. So please be noted.

Trading hours and features of market of each countries with XM

XM enables 24 hours a day and 5 days a week trading except Saturday and Sunday, therefore you can access FX market throughout the day.

Flow of trading hours of each country

There is no specific exchange in FX unlike stock market and markets are named as 'XX market' after the major cities where the trading is most actively performed at the time of trading hours. 24 hours trading are available through opening of market of each country one by one. So market of each country has its own actively traded descriptions/hours.

Flow of trading hours of each country

Flow of trading hours of each country

Feature of Oceanian hours

Oceanian hours start at around 22:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) when Wellington market in New Zealand or Sydney market in Australia opens. There are least numbers of market participants with little market movements among all trading hours. As the result market tend to move suddenly due to thin market, therefore it is called 'Devil hours.'

Especially Oceanian hours is the starting time for FX market, therefore when a big news comes into the market, there may be a big gap on Monday opening compared with the closing rate of the previous week. Loss cut or stop loss orders are also not executed on weekends due to outside of trading hours. So please make sure you pay enough attention.

Feature of Tokyo hours

Tokyo hours start at around 01:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) when the markets such as Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore open. Currency pairs related to China or Oceanian region are apt to move actively, on the other hand European and American region related currency pairs are apt to move moderately.

Fixing rates (Base rates presented by each financial institution for the day)' are fixed at 02:55 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) in Tokyo hours. As trades become active around the fixing time, short term trades are also popular aiming for the chances of fixing. Also on 'Gotou-bi' which is either 5 or 0 (zero) at the ones place digit on the date when Japanese companies tend to make settlement USDJPY rates move actively for the payment to overseas. After the fixing, around 03:00 (GMT+2), rate movements are apt to become moderate until European hours.

Feature of European (London) hours

European (London) hours start at around 08:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) and London market which brags its highest volume in the world opens at around 10:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time). More market participants join in the market than in Tokyo hours and rate movements become active. So the market is apt be volatile.

Especially European region related currency pairs such as EURO or Sterling Pounds move sharply, there may be the cases where market moves in the other directions than in Tokyo hours. At around 12:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) market becomes relatively calm, however after 15:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) the market movement will become most active during the day as the hours overlap NY hours.

Feature of NY hours

NY hours start at around 15:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) when NY market opens and dollars will be traded actively which has major impact on other currencies. The number of market participants will peak and the market will become most hectic during the day until London market closes. US major economic indicators are released during NY hours, and market moves sharply at the time of 'US employment figures' released.

London fixings' which is comparable to Tokyo fixing are released at 18:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) and EUR/GBP tends to move sharply especially towards month end. From around 02:00 the markets become relatively calm, however there may be the cases where market moves greatly due to the release of FOMC rate decision or statement of important person during the night.

Trading hours to watch out

There are less market participants and market movements become moderate between 21:00 and 01:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) when Oceanian hours and NY market final hours overlap. Most notably 00:00 to 01:00 GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer time) is the hour when all 3 big markets of Tokyo, London and NY are closed and there are least numbers of market participants among all trading hours, as the result the spread tends to become wider compared with other trading hours. Apart from that, regardless of trading hours of each country market, there may be the cases where market moves sharply all of a sudden when important economic indicators are released. So please be noted for trade.

  1. XM does not prohibit trades on economic indicator release, however high leverage trades aiming at loss cut are prohibited in order to avoid abusing Negative Balance Protection. If it becomes known that anyone conducts a wrongful act, penalties such as account freeze might occur. So please make sure that you do not conduct high leverage trades on economic indicator release.
